Kenya, March 28 -- Business owners in Kiambu County are up in arms over an abrupt and unexplained hike in Single Business Permit fees, raising concerns among small-scale traders who say the increase threatens their livelihoods.
The unexpected surge in costs has left many reeling, with traders expressing confusion and frustration over the county government's decision.
The move stands in stark contrast to earlier promises from Governor Kimani Wamatangi, who had pledged to lower business permit fees to ease the financial burden on small businesses grappling with tough economic conditions.
Local traders, speaking to reporters, voiced their discontent. "We were told costs would go down to help us survive, not shoot up like this without warning," said Jane Wanjiku, a shop owner in Thika town.
Others echoed her sentiments, questioning the lack of transparency and consultation behind the fee adjustment.
County officials have yet to provide a detailed explanation for the increase, leaving traders demanding answers and calling for a reversal of the new charges.
The development has sparked fears that the higher fees could force some small businesses to shut down, further straining the local economy.
