Kenya, March 27 -- Kenya has introduced an ambitious plan called the National AI Strategy, with a budget of Sh152 billion (about USD 1.2 billion). This plan aims to make Kenya a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) technology in Africa.
The government announced this important initiative today. The goal is to use AI to help the economy grow, improve public services, and solve important problems in areas like healthcare, farming, and education.
The strategy includes a long-term plan to build AI technology, develop local skills, and attract partnerships from around the world.
It also involves investing in research centres, providing training for thousands of young Kenyan people, and offering support to startups that create AI solutions for the continent's needs.
During the launch event in Nairobi, the Minister of Information, Communications, and Technology called this a "bold step toward a tech-powered future." He highlighted Kenya's desire to be a role model in the region.
Experts believe that this Sh152 billion investment shows that Kenya is becoming a strong tech center, especially after the success of its mobile money system, M-Pesa.
The government is also looking to work with private companies and international groups to make sure the strategy works well, focusing on developing AI in an ethical and inclusive way.
If done right, many experts think Kenya's National AI Strategy could inspire other African countries and change the technology landscape across the continent.
