Kenya, May 25 -- Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi was reportedly taken by unknown men, known locally as the "Subaru men," outside Full Gospel Church in Mugutha on Sunday afternoon, just after he finished a church service.
This is the second time that Koimburi, who is known to support former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has been kidnapped.
According to Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa, this kidnapping happened in broad daylight as Koimburi was leaving the church.
Witnesses said that armed men, thought to be from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), grabbed the MP and forced him into a Subaru vehicle.
Churchgoers tried to stop the attack by screaming and trying to help, but they could not stop the incident.
In a sad turn of events, Koimburi's wife, known as Mama Shiru, was hurt during this incident. Reports say she tried to stop the men by insisting that she should go with her husband.
The attackers reportedly removed her from the vehicle forcefully, which caused her injuries.
It is not clear how serious her injuries are, but she is getting medical help.
This is not the first time Koimburi has experienced something like this. In February 2025, he was taken outside his home on Kenyatta Road in Juja over claims that he forged academic certificates and made controversial statements about government spending.
He had gone missing since Friday, May 23, after escaping DCI officers on a motorcycle following a bursary event, only to go to church and get taken again.
Senator Thang'wa condemned the kidnapping, stating that it seemed to be politically motivated and part of a larger plan to silence those who criticize the government.
"Not even the screams from the worshippers could stop the DCI," Thang'wa said, pointing out how bold the kidnappers were to act in public. He also mentioned that they had been targeting Koimburi for his strong criticism of government actions.
Local people in Juja are very angry and some have taken to the streets, chanting "No Koimburi, no peace," to demand his release.
Koimburi's lawyer, Steven Mbugua, called the kidnapping a violation of the law, referring to a High Court ruling in Kiambu (Case No. 28 of 2025) that had ordered authorities not to arrest Koimburi until his next court appearance next month.
