Kenya, June 28 -- Liverpool's 22-year-old defender Jarell Quansah is set to have a medical exam with Bayer Leverkusen on Monday, June 30, 2025. This comes after Leverkusen, the Bundesliga champions, agreed to pay £35 million for him, with £30 million paid upfront and an additional £5 million based on performance. This transfer was confirmed by sports expert Fabrizio Romano.

The deal, completed on June 27, includes a special buy-back option for Liverpool worth £60 million. If certain performance goals are met, this can rise to £70 million, which allows Liverpool to bring Quansah back in the future if he does well.

News of the move, shared on social media by @FabrizioRomano, has excited Leverkusen fans, while Liverpool fans are discussing what this means for the young defender's future.

Quansah was born on January 29, 2003, in Warrington, England. He showed great talent in Liverpool's youth academy and made his first-team debut in August 2023 against Newcastle United.

In the 2024/25 season, he played in 17 Premier League matches, scoring once and earning praise for his calmness while playing with experienced defender Virgil van Dijk.

However, he had limited chances to play under coach Arne Slot. Leverkusen, led by then Xabi Alonso-a former Liverpool player-was interested in him, which led to this transfer.

Alonso had recently moved to Real Madrid after helping Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title in 2024/25. He sees Quansah as a future star to replace Jonathan Tah, whose contract ends in 2026.

Alonso stated, "Jarell's strength and ability to play well with the ball fit our team perfectly," according to the German newspaper Bild.

The £35 million fee is a good profit for Liverpool from their homegrown player and shows Leverkusen's desire to improve their defence for the UEFA Champions League and other competitions.

The buy-back option, arranged by Liverpool's sporting director Richard Hughes, ensures they can buy Quansah back if he performs well in Germany. The additional fees, based on games played and trophies won, could increase the buy-back value to £70 million.

Posts on social media, like one from @AnfieldWatch saying "Quansah to Leverkusen, £60m buy-back confirmed," highlight the details of the deal. This situation has been compared to Liverpool's previous sale of Harry Wilson for £75 million, which had a similar buy-back option.

Leverkusen successfully attracted Quansah despite interest from other clubs like Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund, who also wanted the 6'3" tall defender.

His ability to play in different positions, including as a right-back when Trent Alexander-Arnold was injured, and his call-ups to the England U21 team, made him an attractive target.

In 2024, Quansah extended his contract, which set his salary at £45,000 per week. However, Leverkusen's offer for a five-year deal increases his pay significantly, fitting within their €100 million transfer budget after selling Moussa Diaby.

Quansah's medical exam at Leverkusen's BayArena is the last step before he is officially introduced as a new player. As Liverpool use the £35 million transfer fee to pursue new players like Lille's Leny Yoro, Leverkusen is getting Quansah ready to possibly make his debut against Bayern Munich during their pre-season tour.

With the current coach Erik ten Hag's high-energy playing style and Leverkusen's attacking approach, this transfer marks an exciting new chapter for Quansah, who is moving from Liverpool's academy to the Bundesliga, capturing the interest of fans and analysts alike.
