
Kenya, July 25 -- The happiest day of my life was supposed to be the day I paid Sylvia's dowry. My uncles performed dances. Her mom gave an ululation. Not because I was anxious, but because I thought I was finally guaranteeing a future with the lady I loved, I gave the gifts with shaking hands. We had been together for three years. I helped her pay for college. In Umoja, I even assisted her in opening her salon. To show my devotion, I gave up everything.
And I felt like the luckiest guy alive when she said "yes" to marriage. However, Sylvia abruptly and shamelessly left me less than two months after the dowry, not even responding to my calls.
