Kenya, March 24 -- A few hours after we reported on complaints from M-KOPA customers about devices being disabled after payments, another customer shared a similar story.
This person said their phone, which had been working well, suddenly turned off just two weeks after they finished paying for it. They believe this happened because they refused a new loan offer from M-KOPA.
When the customer asked M-KOPA for help, they were told that the phone was no longer under warranty, so the company wouldn't help with the problem.
This response matches what many other people have said: they feel M-KOPA is purposely stopping devices from working after payments are made, leaving customers with no options even after paying in full.
This new complaint adds to the growing frustration among Kenyans who have used M-KOPA's services.
Initially, M-KOPA sold solar home systems to people in rural areas for easy payments.
However, many customers are now saying that these products stopped working soon after the warranty expired, forcing them to either pay for expensive repairs or stop using the devices entirely, even after spending a lot of money.
Sources revealed to Cyprian Nyakundi, saying, "I also had a bad experience with M-KOPA. My phone stopped working two weeks after I finished paying for it. They reached out to me with another loan offer, which I turned down.
"I think they turned it off on purpose. When I contacted them, they said my phone was out of warranty and they couldn't help. I want to warn other Kenyans to be careful with this company because they are taking advantage of people.
"When they started, they were mostly selling solar kits in rural areas. Many of those products didn't work properly after the warranty ended and after payments were completed, which were also very high. I encourage Kenyans to avoid M-KOPA completely."
