Kenya, June 29 -- My life was dominated by ulcers for over four years. The sudden, searing agony in my gut would strike. I was too weak to weep some nights, so I would curl up on the floor and grip my stomach. I survived on bland oatmeal and antacids. My doctors determined that I had H. pylori, a common bacterium that damages the lining of the stomach.

I tried every medicine, followed every dietary guideline, and took antibiotics more times than I can remember. However, nothing lasted. Each time the symptoms reappeared, they were more intense and perplexing. My mood became erratic, my complexion became pale, and I lost weight.
