Kenya, June 4 -- A year ago, I had no money. I wasn't just short on cash; I had nothing at all. No savings, no income, and no hope. After I lost my job because the company was cutting back, I spent months trying to find another job. Every interview I went to ended in disappointment.

I even tried to start a small kiosk with money I borrowed, but it failed within two months. Nothing seemed to work out for me. I felt like I was under a curse. The stress at home grew too much to handle. My wife was understanding at first, but soon she started to look at me differently. My young kids would ask, "Baba, why don't you go to work?"

Each time they asked, I felt a painful lump in my throat, embarrassed that I didn't have an answer. I began to avoid my old friends, deleting messages I couldn't reply to and hiding at home. It felt like life had paused for me. CONTINUE READING
