Kenya, Aug. 15 -- Wearing my finest clothing, toting my old purse, and hoping to land a receptionist position that would finally organise my life, I entered a building in the centre of Embu Town two years ago. After months of looking for a job, I considered getting called for the interview to be my big break. However, the receptionist did not even properly greet me when I arrived, forcing me to sit for more than an hour. The HR officer eventually emerged, gave me a long look from my head to my scuffed shoes, and then burst out laughing in front of everyone. She said that I "didn't have the right image" for the firm and that I should search for something "less serious" without even looking at my resume. Those were harsh statements.

My pride was shattered, my heart was heavier than ever, and I remember leaving that building with tears in my eyes.I vowed to myself in private that I would return here someday, but not for a job. To read more click here.
