Kenya, Sept. 8 -- My siblings and I never had an easy childhood. Although he was physically there, our father was emotionally fading. He would be away from home for days, then weeks, until one day he never came back. We all knew in our hearts that Dad had deserted us, despite my mother's best efforts to justify his absence. I harboured resentment for years. I wondered why my own father would decide to distance himself from his family, and I felt unfulfilled. His absence was especially painful on milestones like birthdays and graduations. My father is merely a painful memory, while everyone else had supportive dads.Seeing my mother suffer in quiet, however, was far more painful.
