Kenya, July 19 -- On June 25, I saw something that would always be etched in my memory. The anti-tax demonstrations had caused mayhem in Makongeni, Thika. There were protesters everywhere, some calm, others irate. However, a few people exploited the opportunity to plunder, as usual. I saw a gang of young men break through the glass entrance of a store next to the stage and run away with boxes of merchandise. Others encouraged them as they ran and laughed. I was internally resentful. The protest did not include this.

Instead of stealing, people were there to push for a decrease in the cost of living. Along with others, I watched helplessly as the proprietor of the grocery just collapsed to his knees. He remained silent. His palms trembled as he gazed at the shattered glass and empty shelves. The next day, rumours began to circulate around the estate.
