Kenya, April 17 -- Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused President William Ruto of displaying signs of mental instability by repeatedly insisting he is "not a mad man" during public addresses.
In a sharp rebuke, Musyoka claimed that Ruto's persistent defence of his mental state suggests deeper issues, stating, "The first stage of mental illness is denying that you are a madman."
The former vice president criticised Ruto's leadership, pointing to the president's recent remarks as evidence of growing public distrust.
Musyoka's comments follow Ruto's statements at various events, including a church service in Elgeyo Marakwet on April 13, where he dismissed critics by saying, "I'm not a mad man. I know exactly what I am doing."
Musyoka, addressing supporters, argued that Ruto's focus on defending his sanity reflects a disconnect with Kenyans facing economic challenges.
"A leader who must constantly tell us he is not mad is not addressing the real issues-high inflation, unemployment, and unfulfilled promises," he said, urging citizens to question the president's priorities.
The remarks have ignited a firestorm on social media, with some users mocking Ruto's statements while creating a loop of videos where he said he is not a madman.
Political analysts suggest the exchange stresses heightening tensions between the opposition and the Kenya Kwanza administration as the 2027 elections loom.
