Kenya, April 15 -- The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) found Sh12 million in cash and $13,000 during a raid at the home of Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi on Tuesday morning. This was part of an investigation into a suspected fraud case involving Sh1.5 billion.

The operation also involved searches at the governor's offices and the homes of nine high-ranking county officials. The investigation is looking into claims of fraud in buying goods and services, misuse of money, and conflicts of interest.

EACC detectives took away documents, electronic devices, and the cash, which they believe may come from corruption.

The focus of the investigation includes strange payments, such as a Sh230 million contract for a system management project and Sh1.5 billion in suspicious transactions during Wamatangi's time as governor.

The governor and the nine officials were taken in for questioning. EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi said, "This is an important step in our investigation into the misuse of public funds in Kiambu County."

He also mentioned that they are examining the items that were taken.

Following the raids, there were protests outside Wamatangi's house in Thindigua, where some residents demanded clear answers about the allegations.

Some people supported the governor, while others called for accountability due to long-term concerns about how the county spends money.

Wamatangi, who denies the accusations against him, took over from Ferdinand Waititu, who is currently in prison for corruption.

The EACC plans to give more updates as the investigation continues, and possible charges may come later based on what they find.
