
Kenya, April 21 -- Tension gripped parts of Kisii County on Monday after angry residents turned on Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, chasing him out of a public event following remarks deemed disrespectful toward former Interior CS Dr Fred Matiang'i.
"You don't come to our land to insult our son," one enraged elder shouted. "Matiang'i served this country diligently and deserves respect." Cherargei was forced to cut short his journey.
Tensions flared in Kisii County on Monday when angry residents confronted and chased Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei from a public event, accusing him of making derogatory remarks about former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i.
The confrontation erupted after Cherargei allegedly insulted Matiang'i, prompting an immediate backlash from attendees. "You don't come to our land to insult our son," shouted one enraged elder, echoing the sentiments of the crowd.
"Matiang'i served this country diligently and deserves respect." The senator was forced to abruptly leave the event, cutting short his visit to the area.
Eyewitnesses reported a heated scene as residents expressed their frustration, with some demanding an apology from Cherargei.
Matiang'i, who served as Interior CS from 2017 to 2022, is widely regarded in Kisii as a respected leader for his contributions to national security and governance.
Local leaders have called for calm as authorities monitor the situation to prevent further escalation.
