Kenya, March 10 -- On March 10, 2025, construction teams in Washington, D.C. started taking down the famous Black Lives Matter Plaza that is near the White House.
This action happened because Congress threatened to stop giving money to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser decided to agree to remove the plaza to make peace with the Trump administration and Congress.
Work crews were dismantling Black Lives Matter Plaza, located just north of the White House, 4.5 years after it was erected.
Following threats from Congress to withhold federal funding, D.C. Mayor Bowser has agreed to decommission BLM Plaza.
The plaza has been a symbol of the fight for racial justice and has been a place for protests and public gatherings since it was created in 2020.
The decision to remove the plaza has received mixed reactions. Some people believe it is a necessary step to keep receiving federal funding, while others feel it is a loss for the struggle against racial inequality. Construction work will continue for the next few weeks.
