
Kenya, July 19 -- I've mentally relived the scene a thousand times. My pregnancy was eight months along. It had all gone smoothly. Every scan and examination revealed a healthy baby boy developing inside of me. "You're doing great, Mama," said the physicians with a smile. I had begun to get the nursery ready. The cot had just been fitted by my husband. We even decided on Liam as his name.
However, I woke up one morning feeling as though my stomach was strangely still. No kicks. No flutters. Just quiet. I first made an effort to remain calm. I had some juice. I was lying on my side. I had music playing close to my tummy. Nothing. With a shuddering heart, I hurried to the hospital. The nurse scowled as she put the Doppler on my stomach. She dialled the doctor.
