
Kenya, July 22 -- Duncan is my name. I'm from Nyahururu, and I'm 34 years old. I lugged folders of job applications for years. My sneakers have holes in them from knocking on office doors. Nothing was successful. While I remained stagnant, broke, and resentful, I saw my contemporaries advance. People told me to just pray. I was made fun of behind my back by others. My own relatives even began to regard me as a burden.
At a family get-together, my uncle once said, "Kijana mkubwa na bado unaomba fare?" I felt in my heart, though, that I was intended for more. Something changed in 2023. I had applied for a once-in-a-lifetime government position at a significant parastatal in Nairobi. I kept it a secret from everyone. I had had enough of being let down.
