Kenya, March 9 -- Sophie Njehia, a prominent youth activist, was arrested on Sunday morning outside Jesus Winner Ministry in Roysambu, Nairobi, amid a chaotic protest by young Kenyans.

Sophie Njehia is currently being detained at Kasarani Police Station after being arrested at Jesus Winner Ministry in Roysambu.

The arrest followed a youth-led demonstration that saw dozens storm the church premises, demanding that Pastor Edward Mwai return a Ksh.20 million donation pledged by President William Ruto on March 2.

The protesters, rallying under the hashtag #OccupyJesusWinner, accused the pastor of accepting questionable funds and called for transparency.

The situation escalated as General Service Unit (GSU) officers, deployed earlier to secure the area, moved in to disperse the crowd.

Witnesses reported that Njehia was apprehended while addressing the group near the church gates, shortly after 9:00 AM EAT.

Locals claim she was singled out by police, with some alleging the arrest signals a clampdown on freedom of worship and expression.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement on the charges or the circumstances leading to her detention.

The protest stems from ongoing outrage over Ruto's donation and a promise to raise an additional Ksh.100 million for the church's construction, moves critics label as politically motivated amid economic hardship.

As news of Njehia's arrest spreads, hashtags like #FreeSophieNjehia and #RutoMustGo are gaining traction online, reflecting growing unrest among the youth.
