Guwahati, Oct. 9 -- It had been presumed that the updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam was in response to the prolonged demand of the people of the State that illegal infiltration of migrants from Bangladesh be stopped and those already here be identified. It was also presumed that once the identification of individuals living in the State is completed, the Centre would chalk out a roadmap as to what is to be done with them. A corollary to the above was the presumption that one essential component of such a roadmap would be repatriation to the original country, in the case of Assam this being indubitably Bangladesh.
