Guwahati, Aug. 23 -- With 2.51 crore out of Assam's population of 3.12 crore being covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) ' for which 1,40,000 MTs of food grain are issued every month by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) to the State ' the State Government should put in place an effective delivery mechanism. Experiences with the earlier PDS showed how the entire system had been misappropriated by vested interest circles to indulge in large-scale corruption and thwart the very objective of the food security programme. Glaring loopholes plagued its functioning and the new programme under the NFSA too can suffer from similar drawbacks unless a foolproof mechanism is put in place.
