Guwahati, April 18 -- The second phase of the Lok Sabha polls in Assam which took place on Thursday in five constituencies witnessed an impressive voter turnout of over 73 per cent. The poll percentage is bound to go up as the final counts were still awaited from most of the centres. This is a healthy trend for people's participation in the democratic exercise where ultimately the masses decide for themselves their representatives to govern the nation. The last Lok Sabha polls in Assam in 2014 also witnessed an unprecedented voters' participation, and all this augurs well for our democracy ' more so viewed against the backdrop of low voter turnout in 2009 which had elicited a participation of barely 70 per cent.
