Guwahati, March 20 -- Acting tough on bandhs and blockades that disrupt people's daily lives and often make them vulnerable to violence by bandh supporters, the Gauhati High Court has termed bandhs and blockades as illegal and unconstitutional. It has also held that the principal office-bearers of such organizations calling bandhs will be liable to prosecution under provisions of various Acts including IPC, and that the police must register FIRs against such organizations whenever a bandh or a blockade is called. This, though, is not the first time that the courts have called bandhs illegal and unconstitutional, with even the Supreme Court having made similar pronouncements against bandhs.
