Sweden, Aug. 21 -- The outgoing Sri Lankan Army Commander, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, has been promoted to the rank of General by President Maithripala Sirisena with effect from August 17.

He was appointed as the Army Commander on July 4, 2017, and was the 22nd Commander of the Army.

He was enlisted to the Sri Lanka Army on October 16, 1981,

General Senanayake has held a number of appointments, including the extra regimental employment at the Sri Lanka Military Academy as an instructing officer. He also served as the Regimental Center Commandant of the Special Forces Regiment, Commander 211 Infantry Brigade - Vavuniya, Commander Special Forces Brigade and the General Officer Commanding 52 Division - Varani, Jaffna.
