Tokyo, Feb. 8 -- Voting began on Sunday in Japan's Lower House election, widely viewed as a referendum on Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's leadership, with voters choosing between her Liberal Democratic Party-led government and an opposition bloc, The Japan Times reported.

Takaichi's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has set a relatively modest benchmark for success, saying its coalition with the Japan Innovation Party (JIP) is seeking a simple majority in the 465-seat House of Representatives.
