New Delhi, July 18 -- Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Friday criticised the central government over Jan Dhan Yojna, claiming that the scheme is the reason behind the "massive inactivity" of bank accounts in the country.

In a post on X, Tagore, citing the World Bank's Global Findex 2025 report, stated that over 35 per cent of bank account holders in India do not use their bank accounts, which he claimed is the highest among developing nations.

He alleged that millions of bank accounts were opened under the Jan Dhan Yojna for the sake of publicity, rather than for "real" empowerment.
