Xinjiang, Nov. 16 -- An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck Xinjiang on Monday, a statement by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said.

As per the NCS, the earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 10km.

In a post on X, the NCS said, "EQ of M: 4.4, On: 17/11/2025 01:26:10 IST, Lat: 35.82 N, Long: 77.12 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Xinjiang."

Shallow earthquakes are generally more dangerous than deep earthquakes.

This is because the seismic waves from shallow earthquakes have a shorter distance to travel to the surface, resulting in stronger ground shaking and potentially more damage to structures and greater casualties.
