New Delhi, July 2 -- Congress leader Abhijeet Mukherjee on Tuesday denounced the alleged gang rape incident in Kolkata, describing it as a "heinious" and shameful act that reflects poorly on West Bengal's governance.

Speaking to ANI, Mukherjee expressed dismay over the incident, stating, "This is very bad. Rape is a heinous crime and it should be controlled. But they are not able to control it. I heard some people have been caught. They are in custody, and a trial will follow."

This reaction comes after a female student was allegedly gang raped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kasba area in the capital city of West Bengal on June 25.
