Washington, Nov. 27 -- The United States has ordered an immediate and indefinite halt to all immigration processing for Afghan nationals, with officials citing the need for a comprehensive review of existing security and vetting procedures. The move pauses visa applications, asylum claims and all other immigration pathways for Afghans until the assessment is completed.

The announcement came after two National Guard personnel were injured in a shooting near the White House on Thursday, allegedly carried out by an Afghan national.

In a statement, authorities said the protection of the homeland and the safety of the American public remains the government's "singular focus and mission."
