ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 19 -- United States Patent no. 12,227,441, issued on Feb. 18, was assigned to UNM Rainforest Innovations (Albuquerque, N.M.).

"Mineral recovery enhanced desalination (MRED) process for desalination and recovery of commodity minerals" was invented by Bruce Thomson (Albuquerque, N.M.), Kerry Howe (Albuquerque, N.M.), Ayush R Shahi (Englewood, Colo.) and Sugam Tandukar (Albuquerque, N.M.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A novel process for treatment of low quality or brackish water that allows increased recovery of high quality water, recovers commodity minerals and reduces the volume of water and mass of solids that are disposed from the process."
