ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 9 -- United States Patent no. 12,289,180, issued on April 29, was assigned to TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA INC. (Plano, Texas) and TOYOTA JIDOSHA K.K. (Aichi-Ken, Japan).

"Vehicle DCM routing management" was invented by Stephen Paul McFarland Jr. (Allen, Texas) and Mark R. Klausner (San Diego).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An example operation includes one or more of determining a data communication module (DCM) in a vehicle is unable to send a message, routing the message from the DCM to a device detachably connected to the vehicle, and sending, by the device detachably connected to the vehicle, the routed message to a device external to the vehicle."
