ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 5 -- United States Patent no. 12,216,376, issued on Feb. 4, was assigned to The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army (Washington).
"Metasurface-based active retroreflector" was invented by Sang-Yen Cho (Columbia, Md.) and Weimin Zhou (Rockville, Md.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An optoelectronic device apparatus using active, frequency-selective metasurfaces to achieve retroreflection at a pre-determined single frequency and optionally provide signal modulation on the reflected light beam. The apparatus may use several active, frequency-selective metasurfaces to replace traditional optical lens and mirrors."
