ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 30 -- United States Patent no. 12,372,583, issued on July 29, was assigned to The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York (New York) and McMaster University (Hamilton, Canada).

"Neural network State-of-Charge estimation" was invented by Ephram Chemali (Ontario, Canada) and Matthias Preindl (New York).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An approach to control or monitoring of battery operation makes use of a recurrent neural network (RNN), which receives one or more battery attributes for a Lithium ion (Li-ion) battery, and determines, based on the received one or more battery attributes, a state-of-charge (SOC) estimate for the Li-ion battery."
