ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 23 -- United States Patent no. 12,368,194, issued on July 22, was assigned to The Regents of the University of California (Oakland, Calif.).

"Recycling and regeneration of lithium-ion battery cathodes" was invented by Zheng Chen (San Diego) and Panpan Xu (San Diego).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A method for regeneration of spent cathode material of lithium-ion batteries involves lithiating the cathode material in a relithiation solution including a reducing agent at a temperature in the range of 60deg C. to 180deg C. for a sufficient time to heal composition defects in the cathode material.
