ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 19 -- United States Patent no. 12,329,727, issued on June 17, was assigned to The Medical College of Wisconsin Inc. (Milwaukee).

"Use of salmeterol as an anti-coronaviral agent" was invented by Jonathan Stephen Marchant (Brookfield, Wis.) and Tom Paul Aufderheide (Wauwatosa, Wis.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Described herein are methods for treating COVID-19 or preventing COVID-19 in a subject exposed to SARS-CoV-2 by administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of salmeterol or the pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof."

The patent was filed on April 21, 2021, under Application No. 17/920,611.
