ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 17 -- United States Patent no. 12,414,814, issued on Sept. 16, was assigned to St. Jude Medical Cardiology Division Inc. (St. Paul, Minn.).

"Pulmonary vein isolation balloon catheter" was invented by Israel A. Byrd (Richfield, Minn.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The instant disclosure relates to electrophysiology catheters for tissue ablation within a cardiac muscle. In particular, the instant disclosure relates to an electrophysiology ablation balloon catheter with conductive and non-conductive surfaces for focusing ablation energy at a desired portion of pulmonary vein tissue."

The patent was filed on Dec. 4, 2017, under Application No. 16/468,525.
