ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 28 -- United States Patent no. PP37,068, issued on Oct. 28, was assigned to Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey (New Brunswick, N.J.).
"Cornus plant named 'Rutstar'" was invented by Thomas J. Molnar (East Brunswick, N.J.) and John M. Capik (Allenhurst, N.J.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A new Cornus cultivar of interspecific hybrid origin, Cornus elwinortonii (Cornus kousa x Cornus nuttallii), that is clearly distinguished by its floriferous display of large, bright-white floral bracts, attractive dark-green foliage, and tolerance of the incitants of powdery mildew."
The patent was filed on Jan. 27, 2025, under Application No. 19/038,066.
