ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 25 -- United States Patent no. 12,342,031, issued on June 24, was assigned to ARRIS Enterprises LLC (Suwanee, Ga.).

"Out of band control for legacy set top boxes" was invented by Michael R. Morisseau (Lowell, Mass.), Clarke V. Greene (Middletown, Conn.), David Bowler (Stow, Mass.) and Bruce Pratt (Bedford, N.H.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A system for out of band control for legacy set top boxes in which an out-of-band (OOB) downstream signal containing control information for consumer premises equipment is transmitted to an end-of-line device, which converts it to an upstream OOB signal, then sends the upstream OOB signal in an upstream direction."
