Mumbai, Nov. 23 -- A 20-year-old youth succumbed to toxic fumes in a jewellery cleaning workshop at Andheri in north-west Mumbai, while two others who tried to rescue him were hospitalized, police said on Sunday.

The incident occurred inside a two-storey building in the Hussain Bhangarwadi area of the suburb on Saturday night.

According to police, Ahmed Hussain was cleaning jewellery using a mixture of sodium sulfate and water. Officials said an excessive quantity of the chemical mixture reportedly led to sudden smoke formation, which quickly turned into toxic fumes. Ahmed experienced suffocation and dizziness before collapsing.
