Idukki (Kerala), June 29 -- With heavy rainfall continuing in the catchment areas, the shutters of the Mullaperiyar Dam will be opened at 10 am on Sunday.
The forest area within the Periyar Tiger Reserve, which forms the catchment, has been receiving intense rainfall, leading to a significant inflow into the dam, raising the water level to 136 feet.
Once the dam is opened, the released water will flow downstream to the Idukki Dam. Tamil Nadu authorities have informed Kerala that the shutters will be opened at 10 am.
A maximum of 1,000 cubic feet per second (cusecs) of water will be released. The Idukki District Collector stated that while residents living along the Periyar River should remain cautious, there is
no cause for panic.
