Gorakhpur, Feb. 4 -- A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was allegedly shot at by unidentified bike-borne assailants in the Gagaha police station area of Gorakhpur district.
The incident took place on Tuesday night around 8:45 pm near Bhaishaha village when the BJP leader was returning home after attending an RSS programme.
The bullet hit him in the back, causing him to collapse on the spot. The attackers fled immediately after the incident, police said on Wednesday.
According to locals, the Kathwalia embankment area where the attack occurred is usually deserted and poorly lit at night. The assailants were reportedly already lying in wait and opened fire as soon as he arrived.
