Raipur, April 14 -- A powerful boiler explosion at a Vedanta thermal power plant in Chhattisgarh's Sakti district has claimed at least 12 lives and left more than 20 workers injured, several of them in critical condition.

The blast occurred at around 2 pm on Tuesday at the plant located in Singhitari village under Dabhra police station limits.

Local residents said that the impact of the explosion was so severe that it caused immediate casualties and widespread panic within the plant area.

Superintendent of Police Prafull Thakur confirmed that 12 workers have died in the incident so far.
