Agartala, Feb. 21 -- Leader of the Opposition in Tripura, Jitendra Chaudhury, criticized the Central government on Saturday for allegedly promoting "linguistic dominance."His accusation stemmed from remarks made by Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to the state at the Eastern, North-Eastern, and Northern Regional Rajbhasha Sammelan.

Chaudhury, who is also the state secretary of the CPI-M, acknowledged that while the Official Language Department is responsible for advancing Hindi and its role in this regard is not in question, any suggestion urging Northeast languages to adopt the Devanagari script is unacceptable.

He stressed that such a notion undermines the region's cultural and linguistic identity.
