Trichy (TN), Jan. 16 -- The first Jallikattu event of the year, one of Tamil Nadu's most celebrated traditional competitions, was held with great fanfare at Periya Surayur in Trichy.
The event coincided with the annual festival of the Sri Narakadal Kudi Karuppannasamy Temple and took place on the second day of the Tamil month Thai. For years, the competition had been held in a temporary village ground.
Villagers had long petitioned Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh for a permanent venue. Following approval from Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Rs 3 crore was sanctioned for the construction of a dedicated Jallikattu arena under the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Department.
