Shahjahanpur, Oct. 30 -- Panic and outrage erupted in Shahjahanpur after a 27-year-old transport manager allegedly died by jumping into a river while fleeing from police. The family of the deceased, identified as Kovid Tiwari, has accused four police personnel of pushing him into the river and preventing rescue efforts.
The incident took place today afternoon at Baggughat in the Chowk Kotwali area. According to Kovid's brother, Shobhit Tiwari, police had arrived in the area to raid an illegal gambling spot. Kovid, who was standing some distance away, panicked when the police began chasing people.
"The policemen caught up with him and pushed him into the river, saying 'let him drown.' Then they fled from the spot," Shobhit alleged.
