Mumbai, May 7 -- The number of thalassemia patients in Maharashtra has crossed 13,000, raising fresh concern within the state's healthcare system, according to information released on the occasion of World Thalassemia Day.

Mumbai has reported the highest number of patients at 3,420, while Nagpur, Pune, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nashik have also emerged among the high-risk districts.

In view of the increasing number of cases, the Maharashtra government has intensified efforts under the Thalassemia-Free India campaign by expanding bone marrow transplant support, free genetic testing, HLA typing camps, and medicine availability.
