Sydney, June 11 -- A teenage girl has been shot by police in northern Australia after allegedly making threats while armed with a knife.
Police were called to reports of a 17-year-old girl armed with a knife who was making threats at a hotel in Townsville, over 1,000 km northwest of Brisbane in the state of Queensland, shortly before 5:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday.
A police statement on Wednesday said that it will be alleged in court that the girl came at officers and was subsequently shot in the abdomen.
Officers immediately provided first aid before the 17-year-old was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that she underwent surgery and is in a stable condition.
