Mandya, Feb. 15 -- A chemical factory that was forced to shut down after protests over a toxic gas leak turned deadly on Sunday when a storage tank exploded during its relocation, killing two workers and injuring four others near Karekatte village in Mandya district.
The blast occurred while the unit was in the process of shifting materials to a new location following sustained opposition from farmers and local residents.
Police said the explosion took place when a chemical storage tank was being cleared as part of the relocation exercise.
Two workers died on the spot, while four others sustained severe injuries and were admitted to the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences. Their condition is stated to be serious.
