Moscow/Damascus, Oct. 15 -- Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has pledged to honour all of Damascus' past arrangements with the Kremlin, amid his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow today, including ensuring the safety of its two main military bases, which is noted to be a priority issue for Putin.

According to a senior Syrian government official, Sharaa was also expected to formally request the handover of former President Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia following his ouster in December 2024. Assad, a longtime Kremlin ally, had relied heavily on Moscow's military intervention to eliminate the ISIS forces and its remnants, during Syria's decade-long civil war.
