Aizawl, March 15 -- The Supreme Court has dismissed a writ petition filed on behalf of former Mizo chiefs claiming that their lands in the erstwhile Lushai Hills district, now Mizoram, had been acquired by the government of British India without payment of due compensation.

The petition, filed before the apex court by the Mizo Chief Council representing the former chiefs and their legal heirs, alleged that the acquisition of their lands violated their constitutional rights, particularly the right to property that existed as a fundamental right at the time the lands were taken over.

The judgment was delivered last Wednesday by a two-judge bench comprising Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice R. Mahadevan.
