Hyderabad, March 21 -- Scientists have identified common antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in bacteria across major Indian cities, highlighting a widespread and consistent pattern of antibiotic resistance despite regional differences in microbial populations.
A study conducted by researchers from the Hyderabad-based CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) and partner institutions, published in Nature Communications, presents the first comprehensive map of AMR in urban wastewater across India.
The research, carried out between March 2022 and March 2024, analysed 447 wastewater samples collected from 19 sites across Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai using advanced shotgun metagenomics techniques.
